A chemical compound is a pure chemical substance made up of two or more distinct chemical components that can be divided by chemical processes into simpler molecules. Chemical compounds have a specific and well-defined chemical composition; they are made up of a definite number of atoms bound together by chemical bonds in a specific spatial configuration.
Chemical bonds connect chemical substances, such as covalent bonds that hold molecular compounds around each other, ionic bonds that hold salts together, metallic bonds that hold intermetallic compounds together, and coordinate-covalent bonds that hold complexes together. Examples of some chemical compounds we encounter every day are, hydrogen sulphide sodium fluoride, sodium nitrate, etc.

Sodium fluoride (NaF)
The reaction of hydrofluoric acid with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide yields sodium fluoride, which has the formula NaF. It is a dry chemical that is used to fluoridate drinking water, and it has to be manually measured and introduced to the mixing tank.
Use of NaF – Cavity prevention is accomplished with sodium fluoride(NaF). It makes teeth more substantial and resistant to decay-causing acids and germs.
Acetic acid (CH3COOH)
Acetic acid has the formula CH3COOH and is an inorganic compound. It’s made by mixing methanol with hydrogen iodide, and then adding carbon monoxide to the resulting product (methyl iodide) to make acetyl iodide. Acetic acid is formed when acetyl iodide is hydrolyzed. Vinegar is an acetic acid solution in water that contains between 5% and 8% ethanoic acid by volume.
Uses of acetic acid – Acetic acid is most commonly used in vinegar production, and it is also very beneficial in the manufacture of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM). This monomer is a necessary component in the manufacture of adhesives and paints.
Phenol (C6H6O) is an aromatic compound. It is made up of a hydroxyl and phenyl group that are joined together. It dissolves quickly in water. It was previously used as carbolic soap. It is somewhat acidic and can harm the respiratory system, skin and eyes.
Uses of phenol – In the aviation sector, phenol compound is often used in industrial paint strippers to remove polyurethane, epoxy and other chemically resistant coatings. Hair colouring, sunscreens, skin toners, exfoliators are examples of phenol derivatives in cosmetic products.
The chemical compound hydrogen sulphide is one of the most easily recognizable chemical substances. It’s a toxic gas that is very corrosive, flammable. In the lack of oxygen, hydrogen sulphide is most typically generated through the microbial decomposition of organic matter. Anaerobic digestion is a process that happens primarily in swamps & sewers.
Uses of hydrogen sulphide – H2S is used to make various organosulfur compounds. In the medical field, small volumes of hydrogen sulphide(H2S) gas are used to avoid cells’ mitochondrial damage.
